Who I help · Investors & Portfolio Teams
Technology Support for Venture Capital & Private Equity Investors
Independent engineering expertise for investment decisions and the technology challenges facing portfolio companies.
Before an investment, you need to understand the technical risks. After an investment, you may need an experienced engineer to assess a delivery problem, guide technical decisions or work directly with a portfolio team.
I offer independent assessments, technical advisory, temporary engineering leadership and practical engineering coaching. Depending on the engagement, I can advise, lead and delegate the work, or contribute hands-on to the engineering itself.

01 · Portfolio Technical Advisor
Portfolio companies need technical advice, but your fund doesn't have dedicated engineering capacity
Technology questions often arise across several investments: Is the architecture ready to scale? Is the roadmap realistic? Does the engineering team have the capabilities the business will need next?
I provide an independent technical perspective to your investment team and the portfolio companies you choose to support.
How I help
- Review important architecture, scalability and engineering decisions.
- Examine delivery risks, team capabilities and technology priorities when issues arise.
- Work with the relevant portfolio teams to understand the situation rather than relying only on management updates.
- Recommend where the company can act independently and where a deeper review or external support would be useful.
What you receive
Access to experienced engineering judgment, practical recommendations for each agreed case and a clearer view of which technical concerns deserve attention.
Engagement & pricing
Ongoing advisory for a fund, with agreed time allocation and scope. Larger company-specific reviews are scoped separately. Quoted individually after an initial discussion.
02 · Technical Due Diligence
You're considering an investment, but need an independent view of the technology
A promising product and an ambitious roadmap don't always tell you what is happening inside the engineering organisation.
I assess technology in the context of your investment thesis and the questions that matter to the deal.
How I help
- Review available architecture, systems, integrations and technical dependencies.
- Examine maintainability, technical debt, delivery practices and engineering capabilities.
- Consider scalability and the risks associated with planned growth.
- Separate observed evidence from assumptions and identify questions that remain unresolved.
What you receive
An investor-focused technical assessment covering material risks, their potential implications, priorities for further investigation and practical remediation considerations.
Engagement & pricing
Independent, deal-specific assessment with agreed access, scope and deliverables. Scoped and quoted individually.
03 · Engineering Team Coaching & Technical Lead Mentoring
A portfolio engineering team needs better code quality and stronger technical practices
Sometimes the problem isn't a missing CTO or a new architecture. The team needs practical support to improve how it builds, reviews, tests and maintains software.
I work with developers and technical leads on real engineering challenges, including hands-on sessions with their code when appropriate.
How I help
- Review code quality, testing approaches and engineering workflows with the team.
- Run practical code reviews, pairing and problem-solving sessions.
- Help engineers improve design decisions, maintainability and development practices.
- Mentor senior engineers and technical leads on architecture decisions, technical reviews and supporting other engineers.
What you receive
Practical technical feedback, agreed improvement priorities and focused coaching for the people who build and maintain the product.
Who it's for
Software engineers, senior engineers, engineering teams and technical leads. The programme is focused on engineering practice and technical skills, rather than executive or people-management coaching.
Engagement & pricing
Fund-sponsored sessions or a structured programme across one or several portfolio companies. Quoted individually after an initial discussion.
Portfolio company support
Need technology support for one of your portfolio companies?
If a company in your portfolio needs technical expertise, delivery recovery, temporary technology leadership, or help building a new product, I can work directly with its team.
Depending on the engagement, my involvement can include technical advisory, leading and delegating engineering work, or hands-on software development.
You can introduce the company or sponsor the engagement; the scope, contracting party and reporting arrangements are agreed separately.
Optional introductory offer - subject to agreement
An introductory session for your portfolio
If you're considering technical support for your portfolio, we can discuss a limited complimentary session for one nominated company. Depending on the need, this may be a focused technical triage conversation or a practical engineering coaching session.
The focus and format are agreed in advance. A full technical assessment or due diligence is a separate engagement.
How we start
We begin with a short conversation about your fund, your portfolio and the specific question you want to address.
From there, we agree who will participate, what the work should cover, what the fund or portfolio company will receive, and the appropriate engagement and cost.
You can start with a defined piece of work and decide on further support based on what you learn.
